California Black Women’s Collective Empowerment Institute Issues Statement on the SCOTUS Ruling Banning Affirmative Action
Carson, CA (June 29, 2023) – California Black Women’s Collective Empowerment Institute, a 501C3 organization, issues the following statement in response to the Supreme Court of the United States ruling that bans affirmative action in public and private colleges and universities admissions practices.
“The Supreme Court’s conservative majority has ruled to strike down the ability for disadvantaged students to compete on a level playing ground for college admissions. It’s a blow to racial equity and increases the narrow stream of opportunities for Black Americans particularly Black Women. Repair for past historic and systemic discrimination is no longer a consideration. For far too long, California has experienced the negative impact of this ruling as we have seen our acceptance rates plummet post Prop 209. With more than 50% of colleges and universities across the country having a race-based admissions program, this ruling will impact our students who looked outside of our state to find a place in a higher learning environment. It’s imperative that we work collaboratively to dismantle educational and economic barriers in areas rife with institutionalized racism. Without our collective effort, these barriers will continue to flourish and affect the makeup of our economic landscape as evidenced in the newly released 2023 California Black Women’s Collective Jobs Report.”
