If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my journey—it’s that progress is never promised. Every step forward in our history, every hard-fought right, every opportunity gained—it wasn’t given, it was earned by those who refused to give up.

Coretta Scott King once said, “Struggle is a never-ending process. Freedom is never really won, you earn it and win it in every generation.” Those words echo deeply today, as we continue to see challenges to justice, equality, and basic human rights.
The Work of Every Generation
Think about the trailblazers who came before us—Harriet Tubman, Fannie Lou Hamer, Shirley Chisholm, and of course, Coretta Scott King herself. These women, and so many others, didn’t wait for someone to hand them power. They took action. They organized. They sacrificed. And they paved the way for us to stand where we are today.
But as Coretta reminded us, freedom isn’t a one-time victory. It’s a constant fight. Just because laws are passed, barriers are broken, and glass ceilings are shattered doesn’t mean the work is done. Every generation has to defend and expand on the progress made before them.
What Does That Mean for Us?
For some, it means speaking up at school board meetings, ensuring every child has access to a quality education. For others, it’s about advocating for policies that protect our communities, voting in every election—not just the big ones. It might mean mentoring a young girl who doesn’t yet see her full potential or creating opportunities for the next generation of leaders.
It also means taking care of ourselves, because sustained change requires sustained strength. The work can be exhausting, but we do not give up. We rest, we reflect, and then we push forward—together.
Our Time Is Now
We owe it to those who came before us, and to those who will come after us, to keep marching forward. To raise our voices. To demand better. To step up and lead.
So, my question for you is: What will you do to win freedom for the next generation?
Because the fight isn’t over. It never is. But as long as we stand together, keep striving, and never lose sight of what’s possible, we will continue to move forward.
Let’s keep going.
